Why noradrenaline matters

Noradrenaline (also called norepinephrine in US papers) is a key neurotransmitter produced mainly in a small part of the brainstem called the locus coeruleus. It plays a crucial role in mood regulation, mental clarity, memory, and stress response. 

Many antidepressants—like SNRIs and some tricyclics—target this system to increase noradrenaline availability in the brain [1].

Interestingly, both sauna and cold-water immersion (CWI) naturally activate noradrenaline production, potentially offering antidepressant effects without the side effects associated with medication.


Cold-Water Immersion (CWI) & Depression

Cold exposure, even as simple as cold showers or a brief dip in a chilly sea, rapidly elevates norepinephrine levels. One study found that cold water immersion can increase norepinephrine by 200%–300%, and in some conditions by up to 530% [2].
