🔥 Can Everyone Use a Sauna? Pre-Existing Medical Conditions to Consider 🔥
Sauna should feel like a gift – not a test. It's not about how long you can stay in, or how hot you can go. It's about feeling grounded, warm, and whole.
Everyone knows their own body best. We’re here to support that. If you’ve got a medical condition, or you're just not sure how your body will respond, let us know – we can often adjust session conditions to suit. Lower temperatures, shorter stints, space to lie down, or cool-down breaks… it’s all possible.
That said, there are some health conditions where a little extra care is needed.
Here’s a guide to help you decide what’s right for you.
❗️Heart Conditions
Sauna bathing gently stresses the heart – your heart rate rises and your blood vessels widen. This is often a good thing! But if you’ve had a recent heart attack, have unstable angina, severe aortic stenosis, or advanced heart failure, sauna use could be risky.
If you have a heart condition and you’re unsure, always let us know beforehand and take extra care- sit near the door, get regular breaks, build up your tolerence over a long time....and check with your doctor before joining us.
❗️Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension)
Because heat causes blood vessels to widen, your blood pressure may drop. If you’re someone who gets light-headed or faints easily, this is something to watch for. Hydrate well, take your time, and let us know if you’re feeling woozy.
❗️High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Many people with well-managed high blood pressure can still use the sauna safely. But if your blood pressure is uncontrolled, or you’re on medication that affects heat regulation, again let us know!!..and speak with your GP before coming.
❗️Pregnancy
During pregnancy – especially the first trimester – saunas are usually not recommended due to the risk of overheating. Later on, some people with uncomplicated pregnancies and sauna experience may still take part gently, but only with their healthcare provider’s go-ahead.
❗️Respiratory Conditions
If you have asthma, COPD, or any chronic lung condition, heat and steam might feel relieving – or aggravating. It varies from person to person. You’re always welcome to try a short session and see how it feels, with an easy exit if needed.
❗️Skin Conditions & Infections
If you have open wounds, active skin infections, or inflamed flare-ups of eczema or psoriasis, it’s best to skip the sauna until your skin is calm and healed. This is to avoid irritation and keep the space safe for everyone.
❗️Epilepsy or Seizure Disorders
Heat can be a trigger for seizures for some people with epilepsy. This is a strong caution area – always check with your doctor, and never sauna alone if you do take part.
❗️Alcohol & Medications
Please don’t use the sauna after drinking alcohol, or if you’re on medication that affects your ability to sweat or stay alert. This includes some blood pressure meds, antidepressants, and antihistamines. If in doubt – ask your pharmacist or GP.
🧘 What’s Most Important: Listening to Your Body
If something feels off – step out, cool down, and take care of yourself. There’s no prize for pushing through. Sauna is here to support your wellbeing, not challenge it.
We're always happy to chat through concerns in advance, and we’ll do what we can to tailor your session – whether that's adjusting temperature, extending cool-down time, or creating a gentler, more supportive rhythm for your body.
Stay warm, stay well,
